ATM Withdrawal Fees in South Africa
April 16 2024 | Tagged: ATM Withdrawal Fees
There are no free ATM withdrawals in South Africa (as of April 2024). This post details the ATM withdrawal charges associated with 5 of the most popular banks in South Africa:
- Capitec Bank
- Standard Bank
- ABSA Bank
- FNB
- NEDBank
How much is an ATM machine in South Africa
There are no free ATM withdrawals in South Africa for the traveller, as is with the case in Mexico, Thailand and Panama.
As of 2024 ATMs the 5 most popular banks were charging either 50 or 75 Rand.
This is NOT about withdrawal fees associated with your card. This is the fee charged by the bank whose ATM you are using.
Yes, I know some banks allow their customers to get ATM withdrawal fees refunded, Charles Schwab for example but like I said, this post is not about that. It's for travellers from across the globe, not just those from USA who can get a Charles Schwab account.
This information comes from my 'man on the ground', in Cape Town.
Locals pay 20 Rand when using an ATM that is not associated with their bank.
Locals can get 'cash back' at the supermarkets. Foreigners can not get cash back.
But all is not lost in Cape Town at least. It's virtually a cashless society.
You can pay with a card everywhere. Even at market stalls. Traders have their own card readers so customers can purchase products.
And I am not liking where this is going.
